Bethpage Black Golf Course
Farmingdale, New York
Summer 2009
The Client: Pinpoint Visualization of Surrey, UK for NBC.
The Project: At Bethpage State Park, located in Farmingdale, New York, visitors enjoy hiking trails, picnic areas, bridle paths – and five award-winning golf courses. The park’s famed Black course, designed by noted course architect A.W. Tillinghast, hosted the U.S. Open in 2002 and 2009.
Our Work: In preparation for the 2009 U.S. Open, Kappa Mapping stereocompiled course topography and the boundaries of major course features: tees, fairways, bunkers, water hazards, and greens. From this data, we produced a Digital Terrain Model (DTM), which allowed for 3-D modeling of the course. Using the DTM and the aerial photography used in stereocompilation, we then produced a set of high-resolution, relief-corrected color orthophotography.
Client Benefits: Our data and imagery was used by Pinpoint Visualization of Surrey, UK to develop fly-throughs of the course’s 18 holes and to provide visuals for use during televised broadcasts of the U.S. Open.
